Away Luggage Review 2026: Series 3 Carry-Ons With Wheel Brakes, Hideaway Hooks and 100-Day Returns

The train lurches out of the station and, out of the corner of your eye, you see your suitcase start to roll down the aisle on its own. Every traveler knows that half-second of panic. Away's new Series 3 luggage was built around moments exactly like that one: a wheel brake that locks the case in place on trains and slopes, a handle that stops at any height, and hooks that hold your jacket so your hands stay free. It's the same minimalist hard shell people recognize from airport carousels, rethought from the wheels up.

We went through Away's luggage, bags, prices and policies in October 2026. Here's how the carry-ons compare, which size suits which traveler, and how to pay less.

The Story: Ten Years of Travel Feedback in One Suitcase

Away describes Series 3 as "ten years in the making," the next evolution of luggage built around "movement, utility, protection, and everything the journey demands." The brand now runs 16 stores across the U.S., UK and Canada, from New York and Los Angeles to London and Toronto, and every suitcase comes with its Away LifetimeCare™ coverage.

Beyond suitcases, Away sells duffles, totes, backpacks, packing cubes and tech organizers, plus a pre-owned line called Away Reclaimed, so you can kit out a whole trip from one place.

What's New in Series 3

According to Away's Series 3 page, the update focuses on the parts of a suitcase you touch most:

  • StopLock™ brakes. Lock the wheels so your case stays put "on sloped inclines and trains."
  • WhisperGlide™ 360 wheels. Triple ball-bearing spinner wheels designed to roll smoothly and quietly.
  • Infinite Height Trolley. The handle adjusts to any height instead of three fixed stops, so tall and short travelers both get a comfortable grip.
  • Hands-Free Hideaway Hooks. Retractable dual hooks hold up to 22 lbs, handy for a coat or tote while you queue.
  • Smarter interior. Outward-opening interiors, a Bluetooth tracker pocket, the patented CompressMore™ compression system and a "Keep It Clean Kit" with a laundry bag, pouch and exterior buffing sponge.
  • Tested hard. Away lists zipper tests of up to 8,000 open-and-close cycles and drop tests at 10°F.

The Lineup: Which Away Suitcase Is Yours?

Specs below come from Away's carry-on comparison page; all four Series 3 carry-ons use a polycarbonate shell, 360° spinner wheels, a TSA-approved combination lock and StopLock™ brakes.

The Carry-On Flex 3 (41 L, 47 L expanded)$378You need room for souvenirs on the way home
The Bigger Carry-On Flex 3 (49 L, 56 L expanded)$398You want the most carry-on space Away offers

The Aluminum Edge Carry-On$428You want an aluminum frame and reinforced corners

Signature Weekender$278You want a soft bag for weekends away

Carry-On or Bigger Carry-On?

The difference is about an inch in each direction and 8 liters of space. The Carry-On 3 is the safer pick for strict airlines and international flights. The Bigger Carry-On 3 fits more clothes, but always check your airline's size limits before you fly. Both nest inside the Medium, Large and Trunk for storage at home.

Do you need Flex?

Flex 3 models add a zipper expansion of 2.25 inches of depth, taking the Carry-On from 41 L to 47 L and the Bigger Carry-On from 49 L to 56 L. You pay $50 more and carry roughly half a pound extra. If you always come home with more than you left with, it's worth it.

Topside: the packing rethink

Topside opens from the top instead of splitting in half, which helps in tight hotel rooms and on trains. Away pitches it for 3–5 day trips and says it adds a 2" (5 cm) zipper expansion, a back wheel brake and a dedicated sleeve for a 16" laptop.

Away FAQ

Will the Away Carry-On fit in the overhead bin?

The Carry-On 3 measures 22.1" × 14.4" × 9.1". Away designs it as carry-on luggage, but airline limits vary, so check yours before you fly.

Does Away cover airline damage?

Yes, for the first five years. LifetimeCare™ covers functional damage from airline mishandling, drops and rough handling, as well as manufacturing defects.

Can I return luggage I've already used?

Away's page states free returns and exchanges for the first 100 days on unused items.

What's the difference between the Carry-On 3 and Carry-On Flex 3?

Same outer size, but the Flex adds a 2.25" zipper expansion (41 L to 47 L) and weighs 9 lbs instead of 8.6 lbs. It costs $378 versus $328.

Our Verdict

Series 3 fixes the small annoyances that make travel tiring: runaway suitcases, handles at the wrong height, nowhere to hang a coat. Add 100 days of free returns on unused bags and five years of repairs that include airline damage, and Away remains a strong pick for people who fly often. Start with the Carry-On 3, go Flex if you shop on vacation, and check our Away deals page before you order.
