REI Review 2026: Is the Co-op the Smartest Place to Buy a Carry-On Travel Pack?
Gate C14, twenty minutes to boarding. Everyone around you is wrestling a roller bag toward the sizer, and you just shrug one strap off your shoulder, unzip the laptop sleeve for security in a single pull, and zip it shut again. Your whole week is on your back: clothes in a clamshell main compartment, passport in a hidden pocket, water bottle in the side stretch pocket. No checked-bag fee, no carousel, no waiting.
That's the kind of trip REI is built for. We went through REI's travel pack and luggage aisles, prices, membership perks and return rules in October 2026, so you can pick the right bag for your style of travel and pay as little as possible for it.
The Story: An Outdoor Co-op That Also Gets Travelers
REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) says it has been "sharing our passion for the outdoors since 1938." It's a co-op: you can shop without joining, but members pay a one-time $30 fee and get lifetime perks, with no yearly dues. REI says its community of lifetime members grew to 26 million in 2025.
Most people know REI for tents and hiking boots. But its Travel department is a serious one-stop shop for anyone who'd rather carry than check. When we looked, the Travel Packs category alone listed 80 packs from brands like Osprey, Cotopaxi, Peak Design, Patagonia, Aer, Matador, Thule, The North Face and REI's own REI Co-op line. 62 of them were tagged carry-on, and 74 had a laptop compartment.
What Makes REI Different for Travelers
A single-brand shop can only show you its own bags. REI lets you compare them side by side, then backs the purchase with co-op policies:
- Filters that match real trips. You can sort travel packs by "Weekend (35–50L)", "Multiday (50–80L)" or "Extended (70+ L)", plus checkpoint-friendly, removable daypack, adjustable torso length and fits-laptop size, so you narrow 80 bags down to three in a minute.
- Specs in plain numbers. Every listing shows capacity in liters, dimensions and weight, so you can check a bag against your airline's limit before you buy.
- A long return window. REI's "100% satisfaction" return policy gives members 365 days and everyone else 90 days on eligible items.
- Money back every year. Members get an annual Co-op Member Reward that REI estimates at 10% back on eligible full-price purchases.

The Lineup: Which Travel Bag Fits Your Trip?
Here's a cross-section of the travel packs and luggage REI listed in October 2026. Prices are what REI.com showed on the day we checked.
| Product | Price | Buy this if… |
|---|---|---|
| Osprey Daylite Expandable Travel Pack 26+6 | $110 | You want a light (1.85 lbs) personal-item-sized pack that zips out from 26 to 32 liters |
| Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 35 | $130 | You travel for a long weekend and want the lightest carry-on option here |
| REI Co-op Ruckpack 40 Pack | $159 | Your trip mixes city streets with trail days or hut-to-hut hikes |
| Osprey Sojourn Porter 46 Travel Pack (REI Outlet) | $149.73 (was $200) | You want maximum carry-on volume and like a markdown |
| Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack (Fairview 40 for women) | $200 | You want a framed backpacking-style carry for long walks between hostels |
| Cotopaxi Allpa 35 L Travel Pack | $230 | You love suitcase-style packing and a 3–5 day sweet spot |
| Peak Design Travel Pack 45 L | $299.95 | You carry camera gear or want one bag that compresses into a day bag |
| REI Co-op Roadtripper 40 Duffel | $44.93–$59.95 | You need a cheap, 1-lb duffel for car trips or as a packable extra bag |
| The North Face Base Camp Voyager Roller Bag 21" | $260 | You'd still rather roll than carry |
Osprey Daylite 35 vs. REI Co-op Ruckpack 40
The Daylite Carry-On 35 weighs 2 lbs 0.5 oz, measures 19.3 x 14.6 x 10.2 inches, and has lockable suitcase-style zips plus a quick-access laptop compartment for laptops up to 16 inches. It's a no-fuss weekender. The Ruckpack 40 is more of a hiking pack in disguise: padded hipbelt, load lifters, a ventilated air-mesh back panel, an included raincover, zip-away straps for the plane, and a 15-inch laptop/hydration sleeve. Buy the Daylite if your trip is all cities. Buy the Ruckpack if you'll walk miles with it on.
Cotopaxi Allpa 35: the "suitcase on your back"
The Allpa's zipper runs around three sides so the pack opens and lies flat, which means you pack it like a suitcase instead of stuffing it from the top. Inside are three zippered mesh pockets (large, medium, small), and there's a padded, fleece-lined 15-inch laptop compartment with a separate tablet sleeve. The fabric is 100% recycled with a water-resistant TPU coating, and the anti-theft YKK main zippers are lockable. A luggage pass-through strap slides over a roller bag handle if you travel with both.
Peak Design Travel Pack 45: one bag, three sizes
Peak Design's pack has a standard 35-liter capacity that expands to 45 liters or compresses to 30 liters with snaps. REI notes it meets most carry-on size limits in its standard 35 L form. A rear hatch gives you full access, there are two hidden zip pockets for cash and passport, and the shoulder straps and hipbelt tuck away when you check it or stow it. It's the pricier pick, but it can double as your daily bag at your destination.

REI FAQ
Will an REI travel pack fit in the overhead bin?
Many will. REI marks carry-on bags and notes they're sized for most airlines (no more than 45 linear inches, L+W+H). It also reminds you that rules change, so check your airline before you fly.
Do I have to be a member to shop at REI?
No. Anyone can buy. Members get the longer 365-day return window, free shipping with no minimum and the annual Co-op Member Reward.
Can I return a travel pack after using it on a trip?
REI's return policy covers eligible items you're not satisfied with, within one year for members or 90 days for non-members, with some exceptions listed on its site.
Does REI sell its own travel bags?
Yes. The REI Co-op line includes the Ruckpack 40, the Roadtripper duffels, the Big Haul duffels and the Big Haul 30" Wheeled Duffel ($299).
Our Verdict
REI is the place to shop when you want to see every serious travel pack in one aisle and keep the freedom to change your mind. Go with the Osprey Daylite 35 for light city weekends, the Ruckpack 40 for trips with trail days, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35 if you pack like a suitcase, or the Peak Design 45 if one bag has to do it all. If you'll be back for more gear, the one-time $30 membership, with its yearly reward and current bonus card, is worth a look. Check our REI deals page before you order so you don't miss the current offer.
