Herschel Review 2026: Quiet-Rolling Carry-Ons, Shoe-Pocket Duffles and Smarter Packing

Gate 23, final boarding call. Everyone around you is wrestling an overstuffed roller into the bin, and you just tip yours in wheels-first, close the latch and sit down. Your shoes sit in their own pocket in the duffle under the seat, your toothbrush is in a zip kit, and your passport is right where your hand expects it. That calm comes from packing well, and it's exactly what Herschel Supply Co. builds its travel range around.

We went through Herschel's luggage, duffles, travel backpacks and packing gear on its official U.S. site in October 2026. Here's what each piece actually offers, which one suits your kind of trip, and how to pay less while the current sitewide code is live.

The Story: Named After a Small Prairie Town

According to Herschel's About page, the company took its name from a small town in Saskatchewan where three generations of the founders' family grew up. To them, Herschel "was a place that had no boundaries and represented endless creative freedom." The brand is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and says it designs "classic products that combine style, quality and purpose", with a "travel everywhere, travel often attitude."

You can see that attitude in the menu. Luggage & Travel is a whole department, split by size (carry-on, check-in, expandable), by shell (hard, soft, hybrid) and by sport, with golf, ski/snowboard and even surfboard travel bags next to the toiletry kits and packing cubes.

What Makes It Different: Small Details That Save Time at the Airport

Herschel's travel pieces are less about flashy tech and more about getting through a trip with fewer hassles. Here's what the product pages list:

  • Recycled shells and fabrics. The Heritage Hardshell luggage uses 70% recycled polycarbonate, and the Novel Duffle and Kaslo backpack use 100% recycled 600D polyester (excluding trims). You get a tough bag with less virgin plastic in it.
  • Quiet, smooth wheels. Hardshell cases roll on four inset Hinomoto wheels that spin 360°, so you can push the case alongside you down a narrow plane aisle or a crowded hotel corridor.
  • TSA-friendly locks. The hardshells have an inset Travel Sentry® Accepted lock, so security can open and relock the case without cutting anything.
  • The shoe compartment. The Novel Duffle has Herschel's signature shoe pocket, which means muddy trainers never touch your clean shirts.
  • Trolley sleeves. The Kaslo backpack and the Novel CarryOn Duffle slide over a suitcase handle, so you can wheel two bags with one hand.

35L or 42L carry-on?

The 35L Heritage Hardshell Carry On measures 19.76 x 12.99 x 9.02 inches and weighs about 6.15 lb, so it's the easy choice if you fly smaller regional jets or want room to spare under strict size limits. The 42L Large Carry On measures 21.65 x 14.17 x 9.06 inches and weighs 7.06 lb. Herschel says it's "accepted as a carry on by most airlines", but it sits right at the common 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit, so check your airline's rules before you fly a budget carrier. Both open in a split design with elastic garment straps and a zippered mesh sleeve, so one half holds folded clothes and the other holds everything else.

Duffle or travel backpack?

The Novel Duffle is 43L and only 2.21 lb, with a waterproof zippered closure, a side sleeve pocket and a padded removable shoulder strap. Herschel calls it sized for the overhead bin or the trunk of your car. Buy it if you mostly drive or take short flights. The Kaslo Travel Backpack Tech opens clamshell-style "like a miniature luggage", has extra depth for stacking packing cubes plus an internal compression strap, and has a padded sleeve for a 15"/16" laptop. It also has a hidden earbud pocket and an internal sleeve for a Bluetooth tracker. Buy it if you want both hands free on cobblestones and train platforms.

The small stuff that makes a trip smoother

The Kyoto Packing Cubes set has four pieces (three organizers plus a pouch) in 100% recycled 70D ripstop polyester with zippered mesh tops, so you can see what's inside without unzipping everything. Pair them with a Chapter Travel Kit for toiletries and cables. If you fly carry-on only, keep your 3.4 oz liquids bag on top so it comes out fast at security.

Approved claims with proof of purchase are settled with a gift card for the original purchase price (70% of the last selling price without proof), and the warranty only applies to items bought from an authorized retailer.

Who Will Love Herschel?

  • Carry-on-only flyers who want a quiet 4-wheel hardshell with a TSA-accepted lock.
  • Road-trippers and gym-goers who'd value the Novel Duffle's shoe compartment.
  • Backpack travelers who want clamshell packing and a laptop sleeve in one 32L bag.
  • Organizers who live by packing cubes and toiletry kits.
  • Gift shoppers: a passport holder or luggage tag makes an easy travel present.

How to Save at Herschel

  1. Use the code Herschel shows on its own site. In October 2026 the banner read "Flash Sale: 25% Off Sitewide | Use Code: FALL25", marked valid for a limited time.
  2. Shop the sale colors. Many colorways were already marked down, like the Hardshell Carry On at $183.99 instead of $230.
  3. Clear $75 for free ground shipping, for example packing cubes plus a travel kit.
  4. Join the newsletter. Herschel says subscribers get early access to exclusive discounts and drops.
  5. Ask about a price match. Herschel's FAQ says it matches a lower price from an authorized retailer's website.
  6. Check our deals page before you check out.

Herschel FAQ

Will the Herschel carry-on fit in the overhead bin?

Herschel says its Large Carry On is sized for most overhead bins and accepted as a carry-on by most airlines. The 35L Carry On is the smaller option at 19.76 x 12.99 x 9.02 inches. Always check your airline's size limit, especially on budget carriers.

Does Herschel luggage have a TSA lock?

Yes. The Heritage Hardshell cases have an inset Travel Sentry® Accepted lock, which Herschel describes as TSA approved.

Can I return luggage I've used?

Herschel accepts returns within 30 days of purchase on items not marked Final Sale, and shipping costs aren't refunded. Start the return through Herschel's online returns portal or your account.

Is Herschel waterproof?

The Novel Duffle has a waterproof zippered closure. For the Weather Resistant line, Herschel's FAQ says the materials are waterproof but the finished items are water resistant, not waterproof.

Our Verdict

Herschel builds travel gear for people who'd rather breeze through a trip than fight their bags. You get two sensible hardshell carry-on sizes, a duffle with a shoe pocket, a clamshell travel backpack and cubes to keep it all tidy, backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. With FALL25 knocking 25% off sitewide for a limited time, this is a smart month to upgrade. Check our Herschel deals page before you order.
